Joshua 7:1 ESV
“But the people of Israel broke faith in regard to the devoted things, for Achan…of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. And the anger of the Lord burned against the people of Israel.”

Broken Faith, the statement by itself makes me shiver. In this situation Achan an Israelite broke faith with God and it cost Israel 36 lives in battle and the humiliation of losing the battle because God did not fight for them because of Achan’s sin. It was better to find out the consequences in the beginning and to set an example of what it means to break faith with God.

What is broken Faith in this story? Broken Faith was, Achan did not believe the covenant that God had with Israel. Achan did not believe anyone would find out about his sin, Achan did not believe that it was a big deal to disobey God.

Broken Faith with God also means God lost faith in Israel to be His chosen people and now, God had to punish everyone for one man’s sin. I know we think that sounds harsh… But this was before Grace, Israel was living under the law.

The warning was given by God, everyone agreed, everyone committed. When we gave our lives to Jesus Christ, we promised to trust and obey. Thank God for “grace,” because of Jesus’s sacrifice, He paid for our sins forever so we do not carry a death sentence if we break faith with God.

It still hurts God when we break faith, He still has to bring us around which sometimes can be painful but He still loves us, and He still provides a way back into his presence.

Prayer:
Father, I never want to hurt You by breaking faith with You. Check my heart O’ God, be sure I do not have any secret sin.
