God is Light

1 John 1:5-7 ESV
“This is the message we have heard from Him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all.  If we say we have fellowship with Him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.  But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.”

One of God’s amazing characteristics is that He is light. In the new Jerusalem Revelations 21:23 says that, “…the city has no need of sun or moon, for the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its light.”

The fact that God is light sets up a natural contrast with darkness. Note that we are not told that God IS A light but that He IS light. Light is part of His essence. The message is that God is completely, unreservedly, absolutely Holy, with no admixture of sin, no taint of iniquity, and no hint of injustice.

As far as we, His children, are concerned, we can dwell in the light but we are tainted all around us with darkness. We have to make a conscious choice to live in His light which will expose the darkness and drive it away.

John says that “If we say we have fellowship with Him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.”

There is no faking the relationship with God!

Prayer:
Father, You are the light of the world. If “we walk in the light, as (You) are in the light, (for You are light) we have fellowship with one another.” That’s my desire, to be in fellowship with You, to abide in Your light.
