Wisdom is Better than Might

Ecclesiastes 9:14-16 ESV
“There was a little city with few men in it, and a great king came against it and besieged it, building great siegeworks against it.  But there was found in it a poor, wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city. Yet no one remembered that poor man.  But I say that wisdom is better than might…”

Most commentaries believe this story is an allegory, a story made up to prove a point, but that is just speculation. The symbolic reasoning behind this story, a poor wise person is better than the mighty fits into a lot of stories we see in the Bible; David and Goliath, Gideon and the Midianite oppressors, and Jehosaphat threatened by Moab and the Ammonites, just to name a few.

Although in these examples, God was the author of the wisdom in each case, I would rather fight with God than without Him. I would rather know the wisdom He gives can defeat ANY threat, than to have false confidence in strength. The wisdom we receive from God can give us the deliverance from any oppressor.

Prayer:
Lord, it’s not by might, nor by power, but by Your Spirit we overcome.
