Jesus the Chief Corner Stone

Isaiah 28:16-17 ESV
“Therefore thus says the Lord God, ‘Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation: ‘Whoever believes will not be in haste.’ And I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plumb line…”

A cornerstone was the principal stone, usually placed at the corner of an structure. That cornerstone would guide the workers in their course to making the structure plumb and level. The cornerstone was usually one of the largest, the most solid, and the most carefully constructed of any in the structure.

In context, God speaks to the scoffers and boasters of Judah, and He promises to send the cornerstone— His precious Son—who will provide the firm foundation for their lives, if they would but trust in Him.

Scripture describes Jesus as the “Chief Cornerstone” of our faith. As the Chief Cornerstone, Jesus ensures the stability of the whole system of our salvation. Jesus was and is the only plan of salvation.

In Acts 4:11 Peter is addressing the Sanhedrin, Peter actually tells them, “Let it be known to you all, and to all of the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ‘you’ crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. This is the stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the ‘Chief Cornerstone.’ Nor is there any salvation in any other for there is no other name under the heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Ephesians 2:19-22 says, “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,  built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone,  in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.  In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by he Spirit.”

Jesus is the cornerstone of the church as a whole. If the church is built with Him as the cornerstone it will stand through the test of time and be productive. If it is not, it will fall and great will be the destruction.

Jesus is the cornerstone of our faith as well. As long as we build on The Rock (Jesus) our faith will stand through troubles and sorrows and the tests this life throws at us.

Prayer:
Father, You layed the cornerstone. That is the standard that I must keep. That is the standard for the church as the body of Christ through out the world. That is the standard for our church. I pray that when we are tried, we are not found weak and inferior.
