Our Sins Held Him to the Cross

Isaiah 53:5-6 AMP
“But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was crushed for our wickedness [our sin, our injustice, our wrongdoing]; The punishment [required] for our well-being fell on Him, and by His stripes (wounds) we are healed. All of us like sheep have gone astray, We have turned, each one, to his own way; But the Lord has caused the wickedness of us all [our sin, our injustice, our wrongdoing] To fall on Him [instead of us].”

Jesus’s punishment was physical, he was beaten beyond recognition, His punishment was personal, His closest companions deserted Him, and His punishment was spiritual, God laid on Him the sins of the whole world.

Why did Jesus have to suffer so badly? According to Mosaic Law: “It is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life.” Hebrews 9:22 says, “Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.”

In His punishment, we can see the worst of mankind to get rid of those who oppose them. In His suffering, we can see the hatred and cruelty of satan. Satan thought He was killing God at Calvary, he thought he was destroying God’s plans, but he was propelling God’s plans for all mankind. Jesus suffered and died in order to secure salvation for all who would believe.

This day over two thousand years ago, the soldiers drove nails into Jesus’s wrists and ankles to secure him to the cross, our sins held Him there. Jesus hung on the cross for approximately six hours until later in the afternoon. The skies grew dark and ominous as He died. At His death, a violent earthquake shook the land.

During the earthquake, the extremely thick veil that separated the Holiest of Holies and the Temple area split in two, declaring that THROUGH Jesus Christ, all mankind was accessible to God. Before the Sabbath preparation started, Joseph of Arimathea gained permission to put the Lord’s body in his tomb that was cut out of a rock.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, I cannot even imagine what it was like to go through such pain, agony and torture at human hands, the very people that You created. Our sins held You to the cross, the nail prints are a witness and testimony of our sins. Thank You is not enough to say for Your sacrifice for our sins and shame, so we give You our lives in return. Use us how You will for Your work and for the Kingdom. In Your precious name, Amen!
