Passion Week Day 6
The Crucifixion

John 19:1-3,16,17,28-30 ESV
“Pilate took Jesus and flogged him.  And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head and arrayed Him in a purple robe. They came up to Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck Him with their hands… So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull… After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.”

A jar full of sour wine stood there…when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished,”  and He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.”

The crucifixion is recorded in all four New Testament Gospels. (Mathew 27: 1-54, Mark 15:1-40, Luke 23: 1-48, John 19:1-30)  After betrayal by Judas and an unfair trial, Jesus was flogged and given a crown of thorns.

A company of soldiers put a purple robe on Him to mock, spit upon, and hit Him repeatedly on the head with a staff. They stripped Him of the robe and put His clothes back on Him, then led him to Golgotha to crucify Him.

The soldiers hammered spikes into His hands and feet to the cross. Soldiers cast lots for His clothes. But He said: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”  What an amazing Savior!

The authenticity of Jesus throughout the crucifixion illustrates the dependability of our Savior, His strength and faithfulness. The literal weight of all the sin in the world pressed upon Him as He lived through the final moments of His life on earth.

His sinless life was lived and sacrificed to save ours. What a Savior He is, His death was tragic but necessary for our sins. But soon Sunday will reveal victory.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, I’m sorry that my sins put You through so much pain and torment. I can never repay You for what You have done for me, so I just give up my heart, my soul and my life to You!
