Matthew 6:13 ESV
“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”

The Pope has suggested that, “lead us not into temptation,” be omitted from the Lord’s prayer because it sounds like God leads us into temptation. Let me explain this scripture with an illustration.

You go into the grocery store with your young child or grandchild, and you go down each isle buying what you need. Now you know the next isle is the candy isle and your child or grandchild has not eaten lunch yet, and you decide to avoid the candy isle so the child will not be tempted with the candies. You have lead the child not into temptation and delivered them from what may harm them or make them sick.

In this passage, you are giving God control of your life, because you cannot make it on your own, and you are asking Him to keep you from being tempted from the things that will make you sin or harm.

Prayer:
Father, lead me in paths of righteousness. You know all my weaknesses and the things that cause me to stumble, lead me away from those things and deliver me from evil and the evil one!
