Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

In this verse, Jesus was referring to the burdens that the religious leaders had placed on the Jewish people. The leaders were adding laws on top of God’s laws in order that the people would not get close to disobeying God’s laws. Does that sound ridiculous? It was. These additional rules, often considered a “fence around the law,” aim to clarify and protect the original commandments, but they were totally unnecessary.

Sometimes religious organizations do the same thing these days with their rules and regulations and expectations. Sometimes people put on us burdens to act or think a certain way. My advice, listen to Jesus. If we feel like we have to be a certain way to conform to someone else or an organization, turn to Jesus. He will give us the rest we need and the freedom that we need.

Prayer:

Lord, Your Father gave us ten commandments to live by, and You affirmed that in Your teachings. You told us to love God with all of our heart, all of our mind and all of our strength, and to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. I look to You, and not another’s expectations that I have to live up to. In Your name Lord Jesus, I commit my all, Amen!
