1 Samuel 17:37,40 ESV
“…And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!, then he (David) took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the brook and put them in his shepherd’s pouch. His sling was in his hand, and he approached the Philistine.”

Goliath was a giant, as the Bible would record it, he was twice the height of David. David probably weighed less than Goliath’s spear, but David was not afrai. He believed God would deliver him despite the odds.

David casually stopped at a brook and picked out five smooth stones and put them in his shepherd’s bag. David then went to meet the giant in the valley. The Bible does not record apprehension, nor does it speak of hesitation on David’s part.

It does record that at the sight of a boy coming to fight a giant, a man of war since his youth, made the giant angry and humiliated. The giant cursed David’s God, (our God). David responded by telling the giant that he did not come against the army of Israel, he had defied the God of Israel and his days were over.

The giant threw his spear at David but David was small enough to overt the enemies advances. David took out just one smooth stone and put it in his sling and hurled it at the giant. God guided that stone to the one place that it would do the most damage, it struck the giants forehead.

The giant fell back on the ground and David ran over to the giant and took the giants sword. David killed the giant with the giants sword and God won the victory from the most unlikely person, just a small boy named David.

Sometimes the problems we face seem like an impossible giant that stands in our way whatever we do to try to get around our problems, they just don’t seem to go away. Confidence is great, courage is applauded, but ultimately the only way to defeat the giants in our lives is to trust God.

We may seem too small to handle the battle, but with God nothing is impossible. He will guide our efforts and give us victory to defeat our giants.

Prayer:
Father, on my own, I cannot defeat the enemy that stands in my way today give me courage, give me strength and give me the ability to take down the giants that rise against me.
