My God, My All
Psalms 63:5-8 NLT
“You satisfy me more than the richest feast. I will praise You with songs of joy. I lie awake thinking of You, meditating on You through the night. Because You are my helper, I sing for joy in the shadow of Your wings. I cling to You; Your strong right hand holds me securely.”
Most commentators believe that David was writing these words when he was in the wilderness hiding from his son Absalom. Absalom rebelled against his father and set himself up as king and was seeking to destroy his father. In this time of sadness of heart and a longing for the presence of God to make sense out of all that was going on, David writes this Psalm.
David speaks of a rich feast, when he was probably eating bread and drinking water in the wilderness, that represents the desire for provisions. David was singing songs of joy, when he was broken and sad, that represents the desire for God’s loving kindness. David’s rest was fleeting so he spent his time meditating on God and thinking about God, that is bringing fresh memories alive again in his heart of God’s goodness. David speaks of songs of joy in the shadow of God’s wings, that represents the comfort and rest David was looking for in God. David speaks of holding on tight to God, that represents security. David speaks of God’s hands holding on to him, that represents what he desired once more, to be held in the arms of his heavenly Father.
Prayer:
Lord, We are not in the situation of David this morning, but some of us do need You immensely. We long for Your loving hands to lift us up, we long to feel Your presence ever so real. Our thoughts and our prayers deep in the night are to You for Your help and deliverance. So we sing songs of joy, even if our hearts may be heavy. In Your name Lord Jesus, we look to You, Amen!
