He Is Still Speaking

John 3 :1-3 ESV
“Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.  This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”  Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

I use this passage this morning because Jesus has a way, in the accounts of His life, of speaking right into the souls of men and women. In this passage, Nicodemus had came to Jesus to warn Him about the Jewish counsel; they were seeking to kill Him. Jesus brushes off the warning, and instead speaks to the heart and soul of Nicodemus.

Nicodemus was an authority of the law and as an authority of the law he believed that by obeying the law, he would gain eternal life. Jesus would thwart that notion by saying; “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

Jesus avoided the conversation and went to the heart of the matter. Nicodemus believed in Jesus, but he needed to make a full commitment to Jesus as Savior, Son of God and Lord of all. Nicodemus never publicly made the commitment to Jesus.

What I think is interesting about this passage is; Jesus spoke to the heart of Nicodemus and gave him a choice that day. But understand, Jesus is still speaking. I read His words almost every day and yes I hear Him speak to my heart. Not about salvation, but about what I need to know and understand about Him. About the work of the Father and Holy Spirit, and I have the same choice as Nicodemus; believe and recieve His words, or walk away. My hopes and prayers is that when we read His words, we take them to heart and respond to Him.

Prayer:
My prayer Lord Jesus is that when I read Your words, I take them to heart. I read, Your words, I receive, I believe and I respond. I pray my response is always, “yes Lord, I hear and I obey!” In Your gracious name Lord Jesus, Amen!
