Living Water

John 4:7-10 ESV
“A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink…” The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)  Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”

Although this encounter was odd for a Jew and a Samaritan, and for a man of Jesus’s nature and this sinful woman, it was right in character for Jesus. He came to seek and save that which was lost.

This was an adulterous woman being spoken to by a strange man. In her perspective men just wanted to use her. In the Savior’s intentions, He wanted to bring her freedom from sin, even freedom from addiction, as her way of life suggests.

Jesus was also offering her the gift of the Holy Spirit. In these two words, “Living Water,” Jesus is speaking of the Holy Spirit and a new way of life. This woman came looking to fill her need of water for her home, but she walked away with the opportunity to turn her life around, to bring herself a hope and a new future.

Today, allow that Living Water that lives within us to stir us up and refresh us, to bring us newness of life, health, and healing!

Prayer:
Lord, so many people are out in the world lost, without hope, without anything to really look forward to. In You, those who possess this “Living Water,” we have everything we need. Refresh us today with that Luving Water! Use us to offer this “Living Water” to the lost, the dying, to the hurting and the troubled souls. In Your name Lord Jesus I ask, Amen!
