Psalms 51:10 ESV
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”

Let’s face it, most people think they are right. In any given situation where there is a question of our thoughts verses someone else’s thoughts, in our minds we can justify why we are right, and we can typically point why someone that opposes us is wrong.

Paul the Apostle had so much zeal for his religion, Judaism, he studied the scriptures and his religion with the best scholars and teachers, he was prepared to defend what he believed. When Christianity or “The Way,” became strong in the world, Paul felt the indignation rise up with in him. He knew this new way was against God, he knew in his heart it was blasphemy and he was convinced by the Holy Scriptures that it was wrong.

He felt so strongly that it was wrong that he was willing to imprison and execute followers of this new sect. Then on the Damascus road, Paul saw a vision and heard a voice. Jesus himself spoke directly to Paul from heaven and the voice was only heard by Paul. Suddenly, Paul’s quest was stopped and he found himself defending the very religion he hated.

In this passage, David was wrong in his sins with Bathsheba, God confronted David through Nathan the prophet, so David asked God to re-create in him a clean heart, and to renew a right spirit within him.” He had to be confronted by God before he confessed he was wrong. He then asked God to create in him a clean heart, where the issues of life flow and to renew a right spirit, where the essence of life exists.

Prayer:
Father, before I get off the right path and onto the wrong path, Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me.
