Psalms 27:4 ESV

“One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.”

First, let me dispell all thoughts that this is talking about being in church everyday all day long. That thought gives most people the thought of being bored or having to dress up or enduring a 2 hour service.

What David is enduring while writing this is how to stay alive. He has been running from Saul the King, who wants to kill David because God has blessed David more than the King. Saul also knows David is annointed by God and Saul has been rejected by God. Saul feels like if he kills David, David’s popularity will be gone, but that’s not true.

Thousands of years after David’s death he is still highly revered by the Jews. When David writes, “that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.” At the time of David, God’s presence was known to be in His Holy temple in Jerusem. So, David’s desire was to be in the presence of God, not running from an enemy.

When you have been on the run as long as David had been on the run from Saul, you just want some peace, assurance, he wanted nothing or no one but the God of peace. The same thing should accure within us, when we are exasperated with life, When we are exhausted with the daily fight, when we have had enough, we just want peace and that peace can only be found in God’s presence. Now we know that God is in us and He is everywhere, so our temple could be in our home, car at church, or anywhere for that matter because God lives in our hearts.

Prayer:
Father, I want nothing more than to live in your presence every day of my life!
